Breast Milk Microbiome Analysis Survey

We are so appreciative of anyone who helps us in our quest to move breast milk research forward.

Given our family’s experience with breastfeeding our two children, we realized that breast milk is an area of maternal health/pediatrics where there is little to no scientific analysis or quantitative information available to mothers who are trying to problem solve the various issues that arise with feeding newborn life! After having moved to formula with our son, we wanted to be able to test my wife’s breast milk and recreate some of those important beneficial microbial components that were found in her specific breast milk so that he could get some of those benefits—but the only options available just analyzed caloric content/breakdown of fat, carbs, etc.

To solve this gap, I have spent the past 6 months talking with researchers and scientists in the microbiome space who have dedicated their careers to understanding breast milk. I am building a startup (NurtureBio) that seeks to empower moms by analyzing their breast milk’s unique microbial composition. The feedback has been incredibly encouraging and enthusiastic. Breast milk is complex and difficult to analyze, however the timing for NutureBio may be ideal with recent advances/cost reduction in rRNA sequencing + multiomics, combined with how researchers are now beginning to understand the connectivity between gut microbiome and specific health conditions. We believe that understanding the microbial composition of a mother's breast milk could potentially enable the formulation of a personalized supplement (based on her breast milk microbiome) to extend the benefits of breast milk after a mother stops breastfeeding her child.

We would love to hear from you! Please see the link below to a quick survey and the following overview materials. All responses are anonymous, but please feel free to also reach out to me directly if there's anything you think we should keep in mind! We truly appreciate your consideration and help on this. Let us know if you have any questions.
